The Converging World

Young Leaders of Mumbai and Bristol

We help disadvantaged communities to develop their potential through the action of enterprising young people in their midst. We are developing the ambition and enterprise of young leaders in a poor area of Bristol and a Mumbai slum. We connect them via the internet and guide their development.

The problem is lack of leadership and aspiration within certain disadvantaged communities. No child from the Bristol school has gone on to university. The Mumbai slum lacks facilities that the UK would consdier essential. Our project seeks to inspire young people in highly disadvantaged communities by stretching their horizons and guiding them towards action which will improve their communities and build their own potential to become leaders.

We believe that lack of aspiration and community action need to be addressed from within the community, and that this will take time. Young people can provide the energy to create change if they are stimulated, guided and encouraged at a young age. We have completed a pilot project that links these two communities and generated enthusiasm and learning for a longer programme. We connect the young people via Skype and teachers/youth leaders guide them through a programme of exploration.
