Siobhan Davies Dance has been developing an innovative project with Charlotte Sharman Primary School, which is immediately adjacent to its award-winning new home in Southwark, Siobhan Davies Studios. Over the course of a year, teachers and pupils are exploring the interplay between dance, choreography and the natural environment. The company now wants to extend Primary Bank to other schools in Southwark and beyond to enable hundreds of young Londoners to enjoy learning through dance.

    Situation

Primary Bank is Siobhan Davies Dance’s flagship project for local schools. Its pilot phase has involved extensive preliminary workshops, professional development and a year long project with Year 5 pupils at Charlotte Sharman Primary School, which is immediately adjacent to the company’s new home in Southwark. Led by the company’s artistic director, Siobhan Davies, Primary Bank is enabling the school to explore how dance can be used as a learning resource across the curriculum. Since September 2007, pupils have been looking at how they can express their response to their local environment through dance and art, architecture, creative play, exhibition work, lighting design, philosophy, photography and music. 'I learnt that dancing isn’t something that pops out of anywhere, it’s a talent that we all have but it’s just hidden inside us.' Year 5 pupil from class 5B 'I learnt that a movement can be anything - it can be made by a shape, a shadow, buildings and cars. I would love to go to Siobhan Davies Studios again.' Year 5 pupil from class 5G The pilot phase of Primary Bank has been supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Siobhan Davies Dance is now looking at ways in which it can extend the project to other schools in Southwark, creating a model that can be replicated across the borough and beyond and that introduces many more young people to the creative potential of dance. It would like to talk to donors who want to make a real impact on young Londoner’s lives by expanding their horizons and enabling them to look at the world afresh. Siobhan Davies Dance is one of the UK’s leading independent contemporary dance companies. It moved to Siobhan Davies Studios in 2006. The landmark building attracted 17,344 attendances in its first year of operation as well as a RIBA Design Award and is already established as a valuable resource in one of London’s more deprived boroughs.
