Sheffield Wildlife Trust is a local charity, committed to giving children the best start... Our Education Service provides programmes of activity for ages 3 to 16 years. This means children of all abilities, and children from all backgrounds are able to attend, to take part and come away with new experiences and ideas. Approximately ¾ of the schools and groups we work with are in disadvantaged areas of South Yorkshire suffering from high levels of unemployment, crime and deprivation We aim to provide children of all ages with positive outdoor experiences and to support them to build a positive relationship with the natural environment.

    Situation

Our Education Officers organise hundreds of different environmental activities, including improving school grounds and habitats, wildlife gardening, woodland wanders, pond dipping and minibeast hunts. All the activities are fun, educational and help children learn safely outdoors. There are five principles underpinning all the activities we run: · We will provide high quality, learning-based activities which support children’s personal, cognitive and physical development · Our activities will aim to raise awareness about the importance of the environment, biodiversity and sustainability · We will work with children, families and schools to increase use of outdoor spaces in a way that gives children more positive experiences in their local environment · We will give children and young people a chance to express their opinions and make a difference to their local environment. · We will ensure all our activities are safe and appropriate for the children involved. By taking part in our activities, children are supported to …. · Learn new skills and develop their self confidence · Form new friendships · Enjoy new experiences · Have fun outdoors · Make real improvements to their local environment Why this project really matters... By giving children these experiences today, we hope they will go on to develop a passion for protecting the natural world in the future “I think it’s really good because you can get your hands dirty and go outside. It is much better than being in school. I feel happy when I am outside doing things.” Freya, age 11
