We are seeking funding to support the costs of one of our Family Support Workers transporting terminally ill children and their brothers and sisters to and from hospital appointments, school, after-school clubs and on fun days out to zoos, animal farms and leisure centres.

    Situation

Our Family Support Workers aim to do two things for the sick child and their siblings – to make their daily lives as ‘normal’ as possibly by assisting with the day to day routines and also to create special happy memories by taking them out to have fun together, where they can forget about the endless rounds of hospital visits and stress and strains that their situation creates on the whole family. Many of the families we support do not have access to their own transport so day trips can be limited. We also help to transport the sick children to and from hospital, meaning that they do not have to endure the stresses and hold ups of public transport when they are feeling unwell. Our Family Support Workers are transporting children on a daily basis and each worker supports approximately 10 families at any one time. Outcomes – in the words of one of our mother’s: • I no longer arrive late and exhausted from the stairs of the tube or the expense of a mini cab. • I no longer worry about the journey home more than the transplant itself when I’m in there (silly to say, but true!). Do you know, when the consultants are briefing me, there is always a moment when I notice the sun setting over his shoulder. I’ve often neglected to ask pre-prepared questions only because getting home before rush hour seemed more urgent. • And last, but not least, I no longer have to go through these regular appointments alone.
