    Situation

Young people with a problem commonly have to re-tell their story to every agency to which they are referred. This results in missing appointments and specialist support, and slipping through the system unnoticed - all because many young people with difficulties are reluctant to keep re-telling their story. The young people we meet through our detached work project on the streets have been telling us consistently that they would use a one-stop shop. The issues that most frequently arise at the Advice Project are: • Unprotected sex – we are licensed to demonstrate and distribute condoms • Concerns about sexual health and infections – we organise appointments at the sexual health clinic • Substance misuse – we engage in tier 1 and 2 drug intervention work, distribute harm minimisation cards to know drug users and ‘signpost’ people to the community drug project programme for additional support • Youth unemployment – we help our clients search for job vacancies, complete application forms and interview techniques • Housing problems – we act as advocates for young people with the housing department and also as mediators with their parents. Our youth workers and trained volunteers provide not only a friendly ear but essentially somewhere for young people to turn to who understand the issues affecting young people. If we are unable to resolve a problem ourselves we never just hand over a name and number; when a young person is ready we either make the appointment for them, or help them to make the appointment, with the specialist service they need. In order to offer this service we work closely in partnership with the following agencies: Connexions, Bromley Y, BYPASS, CAMHS, Bromley Social Services, The Benefits Agency and Bromley YOT. Availability: The Advice Centre is open to all young people. There are 2800 11-18 year olds living in the two council wards where the JusB centre is located. These areas register relatively high levels of social and economic deprivation. We particularly aim to serve those experiencing problems and those not currently in education, employment or training. On the basis of current usage, we expect to support a minimum of 37 new people, and 142 young people with whom we already have a relationship, at the Advice Project.
