For young people aged 11-13yrs old the project provides a safe place to go, rather than hanging about on the streets of Bromley becoming vulnerable as victims, or perpetrators, of anti-social behaviour, or criminal activity. The emphasis at this project is that the young people choose what they want to do, exercising personal control over how their time is spent. Our activities vary week by week and depend on what the young people have requested. In the lounge area we have sofas where young people chill out and chat. They can also use one of the computers or watch TV. We also have a quieter area where we offer a variety of arts and crafts activities such as paper mache or painting, as well as opportunities for a private one-to-one conversation with a youth worker. We often invite guest speakers to come and talk about subjects like road safety, or playing a musical instrument. Of course the games consoles, Wii and Playstation, are available. Our Music Studio offers an opportunity for the young people to learn how to use a range of specialist music production software and music production equipment from specialist music tutors. Another popular activity is using the computers for internet access, both homework research and socialising, and we also have full film editing equipment, video camera and software. All internet access is regulated by sophisticated programmes which control the content the young people can view. We run workshops every session and the young people will sometimes want to put up displays on a particular topic, this month we are working on ‘Bullying’ and we are adding to the wall display each week. Availability: Every Tuesday during term time 5:30 – 7:00 pm Staffing: The project is staffed by a youth worker, the youth worker manager and trained adult volunteers. Each activity always has at least one adult to hand and we also enjoy the benefits of trained youth volunteers. These young people, who have used the projects themselves, enjoy ‘giving back’ to JusB and provide a friendly ear for those young people who don’t want to discuss personal issues directly with an adult. At the same time it gives them the chance to expand their own experiences and put the volunteering on their CV, college or UCAS application. “I’ve met lots of new friends at the youth centre”
