    Situation

The idea for this project developed through the relationships forged with young people in the course of JusB’s detached youth work programme. Many of these young people were not in education, employment, or training. These young people were persistently asking when JusB would create a music studio as they saw this as something that would help them to come off the streets. After a year of planning and fundraising, we created a music studio with music production equipment and DJ and MC facilities, which now hosts a Mondaynight music project. We use self-employed music specialists to teach music technology to the young people, leading to an accredited short course qualification in expressive arts. The studio currently runs one session each week and can take 10young people each session. The course content includes music sequencing, using decks, lyric writing, and music production. All 16 young people aged between 15 and 18 years old who enrolled on our first accredited course were successful in gaining their qualification in Expressive Arts. Eight of the 16 young people fall within the Government's targets of those not in education, employment or training (NEET).To mark this achievement we hosted an awards' dinner at a local restaurant where we presented the awards to the young people. Members of our local community also joined us in celebrating these young people's achievements. We are now entering a new phase of the project with expanding the range of courses on offer. Whilst the young people we work with are engaged in this positive activity we will be running small workshops, undertaken by the JusB youth workers, alongside the music sessions to help young people explore exactly what leads those that engage in anti-social behaviour to do this in the first place and then more importantly what young people can do for themselves to turn away from this type of behaviour. Availability: Weekly, Monday 5-7.30pmpm for age group 11 – 18 yrs. Young people need to pre-book their session either 5-6pm or 6.15-7.15pm. Up to 5 young people per session.
