Investing in prostate cancer research is the only way to fill the large gaps in our knowledge about the disease. Since 1994 we have invested over £7 million in research into the causes, prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, as well as the impact of living with the disease. In many cases there is difficulty in distinguishing between aggressive and slow-growing forms of prostate cancer, making treatment decisions difficult. Current treatments are complex and some have serious side effects, including incontinence and sexual dysfunction, which can have a significant impact on the lives of men, their families and carers. Our overall objective is to support research that really makes a difference to people affected by prostate cancer and that will ultimately save men’s lives. Historically, prostate cancer research has been under-funded. We are working hard to raise money to redress this balance. We make an annual, competitive Call for Proposals open to all UK-based research scientists with an interest in prostate cancer and related topics. This year we have received a record number of applications.
