This campaign has now closed

This winter we are open every day and night of the week to provide a safe place away from the streets to homeless people. Without us, many would be kept out in the cold with no emotional or practical support.

    Situation

Winter is an especially difficult time for homeless people, with threatening weather conditions and the crippling isolation of being on the streets during the holidays. Our day and night centres, outreach team, training and employment services and social activities will all be available for those who need them. We provide services to 200 people every 24 hours, including hot meals, showers, a laundry service, computer access, activities and advice from specialised staff. Young people, many of whom may be experiencing their first Christmas away from home, have their own area in which staff create a supportive environment through befriending, informal counselling and advice. Our outreach team go out onto the streets to find rough sleepers in need of support. As many people as possible are put in touch with their families and encouraged to return home. The medical team is on hand to deal with all the health issues brought on by living on the streets in winter. Social activities and groupwork, give homeless people a chance to talk to others and feel less isolated over the festive season. These include art and music classes, a chess club, a women’s’ group, a club for over 50s and one for the under 26s. Training and employment services provide all the advice and practical support needed for people to find new opportunities in education and work. Our work does not end in spring, however. Our aim is to help every person we see to move out of homelessness, be it through finding accommodation, a job, or a support group for their needs. We will continue to offer support to all those we see over Christmas until their needs are met. We still need to raise £100,000 to provide day centre, night centre and café services this December.
