Imagine the impact on the life of a newly diagnosed child coming to terms with the need to inject themselves with insulin up to 4 times daily. We are seeking funding of £100,000 to enable us to increase the number of 'Care Support Events' for children, young people, adults and their families - helping them come to terms with the condition at an emotionally demanding time in their lives.

    Situation

Diabetes is a chronic and progressive medical condition in which the amount of glucose in the blood is too high because the body cannot process it properly. Obesity is a key risk factor - and Britain has the fastest growing rate of obesity in the developed world, with poor diet and lack of exercise directly contributing to the dramatic increase in the number of people being diagnosed. The UK faces a Diabetes CRISIS - some alarming facts: Someone is diagnosed with diabetes every 5 minutes. 2.3 million people are living with the condition. Up to 750,000 people have diabetes and do not know it yet. Over 20,000 children have diabetes - some as young as seven. Approximately one in 20 people have diabetes or will develop it at some point in their lifetime. There is NO CURE for diabetes, so care and control are vital to prevent devastating complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness and kidney failure. People with diabetes face huge threats to their quality of life, and coming to terms with the diagnosis can be psychologically, emotionally and practically demanding. It is not uncommon to expereince feelings of shock, fear, guilt, anxiety and isolation upon diagnosis and go through a similar process to mourning. As more and more people are being diagnosed with diabetes, so the demand for these Care Support events increases.
