Our project will enable disadvantaged young people to develop life skills and enhance their health and well-being through the challenge of life at sea. Here they will develop essential social and communication skills, increase in confidence and self-esteem and develop team work skills.

Situation

Amongst the young people supported by our scheme are those from dysfunctional or deprived backgrounds, at risk of exclusion or failing, with special needs, behaviour issues or homeless. A sailing voyage takes them from their normal environment where negative influences or pressures are detrimental to their development and well-being and provides them with a challenging, alien environment where they have to communicate, understand and accept authority, live and work as a team and be resilient.

Solution

The unique experience of a voyage at sea is a positive and effective way to help young people develop essential social and life skills to help them move on to become independent, useful members of society. As their voyage of discovery progresses they learn to accept the disciplines and constraints of life on board and alongside their fellow crew members face up to challenges that produce positive outcomes. These are built upon as the young people transfer what they learned to everyday life.
