Islington has been identified as an area with many young people in the NEETS category and North Islington has been identified as having the second highest rate of them in the borough. (NEETS is the measure of young people who are not in education, employment or training). We are therefore seeking development or seed funding towards our North Islington Community Media Project that will be comprised of 2 phases:

    Situation

1.) Introduction to Journalism Training Course (which is Open Community Network (OCN) accredited). This will be provided by an organisation called Headliners (a UK-wide news agency producing news, features and comment by young people and formerly called Children’s Express) who have over 10 years experience of working with children and young people in the education and training field. The course will run for 20 weeks and be aimed at 8-10 young people aged 14 and above who are not currently engaging in formal education and training. 2.) A Development/Outreach Worker would then be employed to co-ordinate the 2nd stage of the North Islington Media Project. Specifically they would: 1. Apply for a short-term Restricted Service Licence (RSL) from Ofcom 2. Organise the equipping and programming needed for the above 3. Set up an Internet radio station 4. Liaise and work with the phase 1 project workers 5. Develop an appropriate structure for the project (inc the setting up a steering group) 6. Identify and involve suitable project partners 7. Engage with and involve local residents of all ages and from different communities 8. Link with the appropriate national, regional, Islington, and local media developments 9. Identify what equipment is required (for 1 and 3) and the cost of this 10. Identify suitable local base(s)/premises 11. Market/publicise the project 12. Monitoring and evaluate the work, and provide progress updates as required 13. Identify suitable sources of funding
