Situation

The costs of the war on drugs have never been subjected to meaningful scrutiny and evaluation by the governments and agencies responsible for them. This has meant that current drug policy: - undermines international development and security - threatens public health - undermines human rights - promotes stigma and discrimination - creates crime and enriches criminals - causes deforestation and pollution - wastes billions on ineffective law enforcement

Solution

In order to encourage a proper evaluation of the costs of the war on drugs, Count the Costs seeks to demonstrate the level of support for reform by reaching out to a wider NGO and public audience that has historically not engaged with the drugs debate. A key element of this outreach is building organisational endorsements for the Count the Costs statement, which calls upon world leaders and UN agencies to count the costs of the war on drugs and explore the alternatives.
