In contrast to many assumptions about modern slavery, it is not only women and children who suffer. In fact, over half of survivors of modern slavery are men. And the rate of male exploitation is rising. Forced labour is now the most common form of slavery, overtaking sexual exploitation.

Situation

Men are typically forced to work extremely long hours for little or no pay in industries including construction, agriculture, and hand car washes. Alternatively (or sometimes concurrently) they are subjected to horrific sexual exploitation. Generally malnourished, male victims are often forced to share dirty, overcrowded, unsafe accommodation and are regularly subjected to physical and mental abuse to enforce their exploitation. Unseen provides emergency, safe accommodation for male survivors.

Solution

Our men’s safehouse shelters five men at a time and offers expert support so they can take their first steps towards a life of independence and freedom. In addition to treating their physical injuries, malnutrition, depression, fear and isolation, the support workers at our safehouse help the men to navigate complex legal information to decisions about their future. This support is vital to enable the men to take back their personal agency and step out of the horror of control and exploitation.
