SIA is a user led organisation and believes no one is better placed to support a spinal cord injured person than someone who has rebuilt their own life after paralysis. SIA’s Peer Services include providing peer support in Spinal Centres and General Hospitals, an employment service and training.

    Situation

Every eight hours someone in the UK sustains a spinal cord injury. This is one of the most devastating things that can happen to an individual resulting in complete or partial paralysis, the loss of bowel, bladder and sexual function and in severe cases ventilator dependency. Access to a network of support, information and advice is essential in helping individuals rebuild their lives and regain their independence.

    Solution

SIA’s Peer Services provide a pathway of support for spinal cord injured people as they come to terms with their disability and face challenges throughout their lives. The Peer Advice and Community Peer Support Services provide support throughout the rehabilitation period in Spinal Injury Centres and District General Hospitals. The Employment Service explores career options and the Master Classes provide information on topics such as housing, care funding and parenting.
