    Situation

Because MS is a condition that does not give those with the disease a day off. MS affects young adults and sometimes children, once diagnosed it will affect the rest of a person’s life. This means an adult life-time of daily battle against symptoms like muscle weakness and painful spasms, fatigue, tremor, bladder and bowel problems, sensory problems and loss of mobility. In the UK MS affects 100,000 persons.

    Solution

Stem cell technologies offer chances to protect nerves from injury or repair the damage that causes the everyday problems encountered by those with MS. In time, nerve replacement may be possible. Advanced orthotics and miniature robotics will help to restore useful function to people with tremor and other movement problems. This is a neglected area of disability; one where few groups conduct research.
