    Situation

The 365 Campaign of MS Research is raising £1 million to fund new routes to treatment of Multiple Sclerosis. MS Research aims to “restore to people with MS functions and capabilities lost as a result of MS and to contribute to its cure” Stem cell technologies offer chances to protect nerves from injury or repair the damage that causes the everyday problems encountered by those with MS. In time, nerve replacement may be possible. Advanced orthotics and miniature robotics will help to restore useful function to people with tremor and other movement problems. This is a neglected area of disability; one where few groups conduct research. MS Research has supported work to enable the introduction of a new type of state of the art muscle stimulator which fits around the leg, and provides very small electrical impulses that stimulate muscle movement to lift the foot clear of the ground. These and other areas of research offer many areas of promise, resolving some of the problems of symptoms currently difficult to treat like fatigue, incontinence, deteriorating mobility and intention tremor. Why 365? Because multiple sclerosis (MS) is a long term disabling condition that does not give those with the disease a day off. MS affects young adults and sometimes children, once diagnosed it will affect the rest of a person’s life. This means an adult life-time of daily battle against symptoms like muscle weakness and painful spasms loss of mobility, fatigue, tremor, bladder and bowel problems, sensory problems, and visual impairment. In the UK MS affects 100,000 persons. Could you raise up to £500 to “fund a day of research”?
