Question: How do you help 50,000 people with only one health clinic and a very limited supply of drugs ? Answer: Give them TALC health books which teach people how to care for their own health. We’d like £100,000 to be able to set up a permanent resource – a TALC HEALTH PUBLICATIONS CENTRE - with the right equipment, software, specially-trained staff, and a projects fund. This would allow us to produce these badly-needed, vital health training manuals and keep them at as low a cost as possible.

    Situation

A health worker living on a remote island in Zambia with only one health clinic and a very limited supply of drugs for a population of 50,000 recently wrote to us: “A lot of women lose their lives because we have no books to help us teach them primary health care. Please assist us by sending us your health materials.” 1. TALC produces books which empowers people to look after their own health. Where There Is No Doctor – Portuguese: TALC updated this book on HIV/AIDS and other diseases, such as malaria or TB, translated it into Portuguese, printed it and has supplied over 4,000 copies to health staff in Portuguese-speaking African countries like Mozambique or Angola. 2. TALC helps health workers produce books from their own experience. Encouraging Change: A water engineer, experienced in water supplies in developing countries has written this manual on improving water and sanitation in rural areas, using local skills. She emphasises the importance of reducing the burden of water collection on women, and ways to ensure women take an active role in implementing and maintaining changes. TALC is producing versions of this manual in French and Portuguese for African countries. We have found the funds to produce a few health books above, but have to turn lots of others down. Think how many more lives could be saved !
