A Place for Parents is a dedicated emotional and practical support service for parents which directly complements the work of our children’s services. Currently operating in eight of our 14 hubs (clusters of schools), A Place for Parents is based in the primary schools, offering regular individual support and providing the opportunity for parents to focus on personal concerns alongside their parenting issues.

    Situation

The Place2Be is committed to building positive relationships with parents/carers and providing effective support in order that the children gain the most successful and sustained outcomes from our services. As part of our Now, not Later campaign we would like to extend the provision of this vital service so A Place for Parents is available in every school in every Place2Be hub. Our Parent Workers are experienced trained counsellors responsible for the delivery of our free, confidential service. The style and approach of our Parent Workers generates trust in an empathic, non-judgemental manner which encourages open exchange. A Place for Parents supports the development of parenting skills, offering parents a non-judgmental space where they can work with an experienced professional to explore and express their thoughts and feelings about themselves and their children. Results include improved self-awareness, increased confidence in themselves as individuals and greater resilience, helping them to be more at ease in their parenting roles and better able to recognise and address the gaps that exist in how they relate to and communicate with their children. As a result, parents and children are encouraged to work more effectively together, promoting family welfare and the concept of the ‘whole child’. A particular feature of A Place for Parents is the commitment and high attendance rates which are achieved, which is notable given the ‘hard to reach’ groups we are working with. Parents show a strong commitment to the work and maintain regular attendance, with attendance rates consistently averaging between 70% and 80%. Supporting the Now, not Later campaign will enable The Place2Be to expand A Place for Parents so that it is available in every school in every hub, allowing The Place2Be to: • Help parents to overcome the many challenges which they face given their life circumstances and help them to identify strategies to change and manage their lives resourcefully so they can effectively support their children; • Foster parents’ understanding of their child’s behaviours and needs; • Encourage and help to build positive relationships between parents and schools; and • Support “the whole child” through the integrated work of The Place2Be children’s services and A Place for Parents.
