The sum of £100,000 will fund an annual programme of 11 youth encounter workshops in onflct resolution for young Israeli school students (16 year-olds, boys and girls, Jewish and Arab). About 30 students of each national group choose to spend three days at the Village (for most of them it will be their first social meeting with people of the other group). Under the guidance of trained Jewish and Arab facilitators, they enter into a challenging dialogue with their counterparts from the other side;

    Situation

    This programme includes a getting-acquainted phase; discussion about culture; and a political dialogue. Most of the time is spent in small mixed groups of about sixteen participants, each facilitated by an Arab and a Jewish facilitator working together. During the three-day programme, the students engage in a simulated negotiation process concerning the future relations between Arabs and Jews in Israel. This is run by the participants themselves, and includes an attempt to draft a set of agreed-on principles governing a life based on equality. Among the topics addressed in the negotiation: the definition of the state as a Jewish state; the Law of Return; national symbols and ceremonies; national holidays; the policy governing the teaching of history and of the Arabic language; and the participation of Arabs in state institutions. The workshop is followed up a month later by the visit of a School for Peace coordinator to each school to ascertain outcomes of this experience. For those students who show interest and leadership, a more advanced course is offered.
