Situation

40 years ago in 1977, 356,954 couples made a promise to spend their lives together as they entered into marriages and civil partnerships in England and Wales. In 2012, our Government’s National Archives stated that 42% of these partnerships would have already ended in divorce, with 34% of these couples not reaching their 20th anniversaries. In 2014 (taking into consideration the passing of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013) 252, 222 couples made the same commitment to each other.

Solution

We will work with the couples living in Tyne & Wear and the wider North East Region who have defied these statistics and remain committed to each other after 40+ years together. This project will provide the opportunity for an intergenerational transfer of knowledge in our region and nationally as we explore how time influences our relationships dynamic through the lens of political, socio-economic, spiritual and environmental factors.
