Relationships are a basic skill, and can be as crucial to reducing the risk of offending or reoffending as either literacy or numeracy. Our programmes, Family Man or Fathers Inside, provide male prisoners with the skills to develop positive relationships with their families and communities.

Situation

Whilst 49% of adult prisoners are reconvicted within one year of release, research indicates that having family ties can reduce the likelihood of reoffending by 39%. Currently, 45% of prisoners lose touch with their family whilst imprisoned. The 160,000 children of convicted parents have about three times the risk of developing mental health problems or exhibiting anti-social behaviour compared to their peers and 65% of prisoners’ sons go on to become offenders themselves.

Solution

Since 1998 we have worked with male prisoners and their families through our flagship family relationship and parenting programmes, Family Man and Fathers Inside. These programmes, which help prisoners become more active and responsible fathers and family members, were devised to meet prisoners’ specific educational and emotional needs and we are proud of the fact that they were developed ‘by prisoners for prisoners'.
