One of our tall ships, Lord Nelson is now over 21 years old and is in urgent need of updating and essential maintenance to its structure. We are seeking funding towards the refurbishment which is due to take place over the next two winters. The maintenance of our ships to the highest standard is essential, as they are the means by which we achieve our integration aim.

    Situation

The refurbishment will increase the longevity of Lord Nelson and enable her to continue to offer tall ships voyages to around 1,000 people a year. The major items for the refit are • replacement of the bridge deck - £60,000 • replacement of the deck house roof - £40,000 • redesigning and refurbishing the fo’c’sle accommodation - £85,000 • removing and inspecting masts £40,000 • refurbishment of the galley £30,000 • replacing the main engines • forward pump room - £5,000 • replacing generators - £20,000 The first stage of the refit will take place from November 2008 – March 2009. The ship will therefore be out of commission for this period. The second stage of the refit will take place in the winter of 2009/2010. The aim of the project is to enable Lord Nelson to continue operating for another 20 years and offer voyages to a further 24,000 people.
