    Situation

Fanconi Anaemia is a rare inherited genetic condition requiring bone marrow transplant and a subsequent predisposition to head and neck cancers. Due to the fact that the body's DNA repair mechanism does not work properly, chemotherapy and radiotherapy in normal doses can kill. More research is needed to reduce the potentially fatal effects of Graft Versus Host Disease.(GVHD). Various research institutions have their own sample storage facilities but these are not made available to other researchers. We as the Fanconi Hope Charity, also involved in the UK Fanconi Anaemia Clinical Network can help set up this facility and ensure it is available to all. Due to the rarity of the condition (2 in a million of the population) we must ensure maximum access to patient samples to improve the quality of the research. We are currently in discussion with several institutions with a view to hosting this facility. We will supply funding for the fixed and portable freezers and some initial start-up funding for manpower. Once up and running the institution will be able to apply for medical research council funding to maintain the facility on a permanent basis. Our seedcorn funding will set up a storage facility capable of storing 10 years'worth of samples. Together we can help beat this currently incurable condition.
