Through photography, 'Waiting' aims to stabilise the lives of young people in and around Glasgow who are waiting to secure permanent accommodation and prevent their regression into habits of previous negative behaviour (drugs use, crime, self-harm etc) whilst providing concrete creative and life skills.

    Situation

Many youngsters are unable to take up the homes that are offered to them, leaving them in temporary hostels or on the streets, and vulnerable to circumstance. Waiting has been developed in collaboration with Fairbridge Glasgow to address the challenges they face. This project aims to: • help stabilise and stop regression of young people while they are waiting to secure and enter permanent accommodation, • develop innovative, sustainable and effective methodologies for using participatory photography with excluded young people; • support young homeless people’s voices being heard; and • help remove some of the financial barriers to young people entering permanent accommodation. Over eight months, PhotoVoice will work with homeless young people engaged in Fairbridge Glasgow’s programme. Ten young people will attend a 4-day residential photography course and a series of twice-weekly participatory workshops tailored to complement and enhance Fairbridge’s personal development methodology. Young people will be supported to achieve Bronze level arts awards. A peer-education course will train young people to lead photographic workshops with further homeless young people in their own hostels, which will result in localised exhibitions.
