    Situation

The case for investing in kindergarten teaching is compelling, with many young Ghanaians beginning primary school without a solid foundation in literacy or numeracy, which in turn leads to high failure rates, and children being held back year after year. Historically, the kindergarten sector has been woefully underfunded: in many communities there are no dedicated classrooms, the children are taught under trees by community teachers who have never received any formal training, and without even basic government funding, no learning resources are available for the children's use. With the support of the global construction consultancy firms Davis Langdon LLP and Arup, the Sabre Trust is beginning to tackle this huge shortage of kindergarten infrastructure, by designing and building a new prototype school for Ghana. Once the prototype school has been completed, we plan to roll out this model to communities across the KEEA District, at a cost of approx. £40,000 per school. The school building programme will be delivered in conjunction with our teacher mentoring programme and the provision of learning resources to provide a significantly enhanced learning environment, equipped with the necessary resources to deliver the kindergarten curriculum.
