Barefoot College offers working children an alternative through a Night School where children come ready for class - poetry, theatre and song are used liberally to ensure that children learn not just the alphabet and multiplication tables, but also the skills that matter more to those living off the land, like tending and irrigating fields, health, crafts and building houses.

The Barefoot College began in 1972 with the conviction that solutions to rural problems lie within the community. The College addresses problems of drinking water, girl education, health & sanitation, rural unemployment, income generation, electricity and power, as well as social awareness and the conservation of ecological systems in rural communities. The College benefits the poorest of the poor who have no alternatives. The College encourages practical knowledge and skills rather than paper qualifications through a ‘learning by doing’ process of education. Night Schools Barefoot College offers working children (especially girls) an alternative. When the sun goes down, the night schools light up its solar lamps and is ready for class. The children are highly motivated since they realise that education will bring them a better life. “This school isn’t meant to heap yet more work on its pupils. It is supposed to be fun. It’s the only way we can stop people migrating into the cities”, explains its founder Mr Bunker Roy. More than 250 night schools have been set up by Barefoot College in 6 states of India. All the 250 night schools are powered by over 500 solar lanterns. These lanterns are maintained by barefoot solar engineers. Teaching aids and learning materials used in the night schools are made from waste material. The schools are also equipped with wooden science toys made by physically challenged youth. IPartner India has conducted a thorough due diligence of Barefoot College and has monitored and evaluated it over a period of two years. Regular visits have also been made by the CEO and IPartner’s local representatives in India. IParnter India currently supports 20 night schools and the training of 10 Barefoot Solar engineers.
