Buskaid runs a Music School in Diepkloof, Soweto, where we aim to transform lives and prospects through music. Three Buskaid students have so far been successful in gaining places for tertiary study in the UK, and we aim to establish a fund to support future students in their studies here.

    Situation

Since 2003, five students from the Buskaid Music School in Soweto have come to the UK to pursue advanced musical studies at music college. This type of specialised training is not available in South Africa, and competition for places in the UK is fierce. Three students have since returned to South Africa, where their studies have enabled them to make an important contribution to the work of the Music School and the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble. One of these students - Samson Diamond - followed his first class honors BMus with a year of postgraduate study and then remained in the UK to gain professional experience for a further year. Two students are currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where they will be joined by a third student in September 2010. It costs Buskaid around £22,000 per student, per year, to cover tuition fees and living expenses in the UK. The goal of the UK trust is to raise enough funds to securely cover the costs of at least one year's study for 2 students, or two year's study for 1 student (£44,000). The more we can raise, the more confident we can be in our committment to these talented students as they begin their courses.
