The Sixteen is recording Bach's rarely performed Lutheran Masses - both to enable a wider audience to experience this work and to extend the repertoire of the Sixteen singers and orchestra. The intention is to record in May 2013, after live performances in London, and release 2 CDs in Autumn 2013

    Situation

Firstly a live performance can only reach a limited number of people whilst a recording can be heard and re-heard by a unlimited audience anywhere in the world. Secondly, the Sixteen cannot sustain itself financially from concert ticket sales alone (especially when the prices of a proportion of tickets are kept low to maintain accessibility). To reduce our dependence on philanthropy we need sources of revenue that can give us a sustainable foundation for the future.

    Solution

The CDs will be available to an infinitely wider audience than we could hope to reach through live performances and can travel further than the choir and be listened to repeatedly. A quality recording extends our reach to more people and different audiences - improving our accessibility vastly. The CDs will generate income from sales for many years to come providing a sustainable cash base for the Sixteen and making us less reliant on donated income in these difficult economic times.
