    Situation

With a successful history in producing youth theatre programmes, the Company have expanded its work to include youth theatres that operate within the cities priority areas. Young people from disadvantaged areas face a number of barriers when participating in the arts, an outreach youth theatre helps to reduce these barriers. The Company has 2 flourishing groups with focused and committed participants who are passionate about their involvement with the theatre. The programme instils pride and self worth in the participants - a trait not often found is disadvantaged young people. The participants dedicate much of their free time to the youth theatre and this provides them with an alternative to following anti social behaviour patterns. The young people in the outreach youth theatres benefit from the relaxed, informal learning environment provided by the Company; often it is the young people themselves that impose the most discipline on the group. The peer group pressure of the group can lead disruptive participants to behave well, as they are aware that their actions affect the whole group, especially when performing to an audience. The Community & Education Company is aware that some young people face barriers towards participation in the theatre’s programmes of work and therefore the Company has expended its programmes to include Outreach Youth Theatre. The Outreach work takes place in Canley and Tile Hill; both areas of disadvantage within Coventry. By taking their work to the young people, the Company is able to reduce the barriers and engage the participants in the work before they enter the unfamiliar environment of the theatre. The workshops are designed to offer young people a means of constructively expressing their opinions, experiences and frustrations in an environment in which they feel a sense of ownership. As a result in participating in the Outreach Youth Theatre’s the young people’s confidence and knowledge increases and this then enables the participants to engage the theatre and produce work for the Belgrade’s stage. Participants also develop key life skills that are important to success in further education and employment. The Outreach Youth Theatres cost £117, 975 to operate, this includes weekly workshops, Rehearsal space hire and a theatrical production.
