The RSAMD gives young people the opportunity to develop their innate creativity. That’s our mission. We help them extend their abilities and skills, and to workout how they make the best use of these for themselves and for their community. We just happen to do it through music and drama. RSAMD Transitions will keep young people offthe streets while helping them to strengthen their life skills and employabilty.

    Situation

RSAMD’s Transitions aims to contribute to the International and National movement towards social, educational and cultural cohesion for marginalised young people, working with areas which show need as listed in the Scottish Index of Deprivation. Transitions articulates with priorities such as creating opportunity and capacity but more especially with addressing barriers to participation. The project outputs are therefore concerned with developing: • three Friday night diversionary programmes (community safety), • two Page to Stage programmes (literacy), • three School Transition programmes (early intervention), • one Life Transition programme (training). Transitions will be structured around a pyramid of practical service activity. The level of intensity of input grows the longer a participants stays with the programme and the greater their skills development becomes as a result. These activities will be workshop based, will take place on a weekly basis as well as over intensive periods such as summer holidays. The work will be based both locally and at RSAMD in Glasgow. The activity is to begin in the Spring of 2009 and continue until the Spring of 2012. It will operate weekly and during holiday periods. The following outline offers a little more detail on the nature of the activities: Access Point: Friday Night at The Space ¬ Diversionary activity to target times in the week where communities are vulnerable to low level youth crime and when creative alternatives are most to young people. Level One Page to Stage Theatre and literacy project; a referral activity for English language learning as well as development of presentation skills Level Two School Transitions Residential activity where invading learning spaces with a performing arts project during holiday periods removes at least one the challenges of transition. Level Three Life Transitions The 'creative apprentice' approach where links to awards, courses and placement opportunities are developed to support the individual learning needs of the young people The overall cost of the project budget is £489,421.
