The guiding principal of RSAMD Musicworks is to take music participation to people who would otherwise not have access to it, not through the RSAMD imposing what it perceives the community needs but asking local communities at grassroots level the question - " How can we help?" or by responding to the request "Can the RSAMD help us?".

    Situation

RSAMD Musicworks aims to make music available to young people across Scotland regardless of geography or socio-economic background. It uses the broad experience and expertise of the RSAMD to: • allow an interest in music to be developed • develop an ability in music • provide where appropriate, a clear progression to full time arts training Musicworks has expanded at an unprecedented scale over the last two years. Through increased support from Local Authority (LA) and community organizations, provision in 2007/2008 will include and be delivered by: • 900 + children and adults receiving instrumental/musicianship and ensemble tuition on a weekly, long term basis across a multitude of disciplines and traditions across 19 Musicworks Centers • 1200 children per year receiving orchestral or ensemble tuition • 6000 children and adults per year receiving our shorter term, in-service and workshop programmes • 65 public concerts per year • 25,000 combined performance audience • 206 part-time teachers drawn from a huge diversity of areas • 3 full time staff and operating the departments operational and administration infrastructure within the RSAMD. All students participating in Musicworks are on Scholarships of which 80.1% are on a 100% Bursary. Student fees vary between £80 per year and £370 per year. This equates to between 53p to £2.46 per half hour lesson. Musicworks are supporting major developments in many of Scotland’s most deprived areas for example: Bridgeton and Sighthill in Glasgow and through a major Arts regeneration programme in Edinburgh’s Craigmillar. Musicworks has a huge geographical spread covering areas as far flung as Dumfries and Galloway, Angus, Aberdeenshire and City, Orkney and the Western Isles as well as major Central Belt developments. RSAMD Musicworks is also developing major links in Malawi, Aracena Southern Spain and a twinning programme with Uddevalla in Norway. RSAMD Musicworks requests your help to ensure that we can continue and expand on this groundbreaking work in youth music.
