PLAY.orchestra will be th world’s first ‘virtual orchestra’ consisting of a touring truck that folds down into a stage with 56 plastic cubes and 3 hotspots, each containing a speaker. It is laid out as if for an orchestra with trumpet sound, violin sound, and each instruments sounds when the participant sits down on the cube. When all 56 seats are taken, the full orchestra sounds.

    Situation

We want to take this on tour to schools and community groups around the UK that are in remote locations and have no access to orchestras. By combining known classical pieces with five new commissioned pieces by young composers, PLAY.orchestra on tour will also open up contemporary music to new audiences. We will also take advantage of the multi-sensory aspects of PLAY, ensuring that those with physical disabilities and hearing / visual impairment have the opportunity to access an orchestra. We will combine large scale long weekend visits with dedicated school/community day We will present a full day of free workshops with Philharmonia Orchestra musicians and workshop leader. Esmee Fairbairn Foundation have generous funding to the project, but we need to raise a further £150,000 capital costs by June 2009 to secure the project.
