    Situation

The people of Barrow-in-Furness and Walney Island can discover Barrow’s Wildside by taking part in a wonderful project dedicated to improving the natural environment and green spaces near their homes. Over three years our project officer will be on hand to let people know how they can get involved. There will be a whole host of activities and events including walks, talks, practical work parties, family fun days and visits to wildlife venues, as well as the chance to pick out neglected places for a bit of extra special tlc. Barrow’s Wildside will bring people closer to nature. And whilst being active and healthy in the outdoors they can learn new skills, gain practical experience and make the place where they live beautiful and full of life. Barrow’s Wildside is an exciting joint adventure between Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Natural England and Barrow Borough Council and will enable local people to discover Barrow's wildlife together! How much will it all cost? The total costs over the 3 years are around £300k. We have been offered a grant of almost £208k from Access to Nature towards this. With in-kind contributions from the partner organisations we now need to find a £50k for the project to fully go ahead. Why Barrow-in-Furness and Walney Island? We have chosen this area following consultation with local people, organisations and parthers. This contact has shown a need for the project to take place to improve the green spaces for people as much as for biodiversity. Through our existing contact with the communities and groups in the area, it has been identified that there are a number of green spaces that could be imrpvoed to increase their use, value and people's ownership of these areas. What are the key aims for the project offer? 1) Improve people's health and promote healthy lifestyles 2) Involve and enthuse people with wildlife and their local green spaces 3) Inspire local residents, in particular families and children, to learn about what they can do to protect wildlife and their local green spaces Who will benefit? A wide range of communities from Barrow and Walney Island will benefit including: - communities from the 6 priority wards - people from areas of deprivation - people looking to improve their health and lifestyle - those who do not currently participate in outdoor activities - people who do not volunteer - people out of work - people in ill health - families - including grandparents and young and/or single parents - people of all ages including targeted activities for young people and elderly - exisiting community groups If you would like to know more about the project we have a full business plan and proposal.
