To have a working organic farm with an eco education centre situated on the outskirts of the city of Carlisle. We will run and education programme for schools as well as working with the land managers of the future to provide training and skills to support their work in the environmental and agricultural sectors. This facility will provide open access to an organic farm promoting the health and social benefits of locally sourced food.

    Situation

Cumbria Wildlife Trust has been gifted some organic farm land on the outskirts of the city of Carlisle, Cumbria. Potential developments at the site include: > Eco-centre/ education centre attached to an organic farm > Deeply 'green' building of a design to be agreed but in keeping with local vernacular - providing people with information about simple changes they can make in their own lives/households to benefit the environment > Trust staff based at the site > Events and activities for families > Educational events and activities for schools and young people > Working with teenagers and land managers of the future to provide training and skills to support their future work in the environmental and agricultural sectors > Meeting of a regular wildlife group for young people > Open access nature walks > Open access to an organic farm promoting the health and social benefits of locally sourced food. Too many people have become disassociated from where their food comes from. > Cafe area > Meeting facilities that can be used by local groups It is planned that the Trust will focus on: > Educational benefits > Tourism benefits and the associated socio-economic benefits > Rural empolyment creation/enterprise The farm is readily accessible to 100,000 people and has good public transport to the venue. We are in the very early stages at them moment, but the project would need a significant amount of investment over the next few years towards: > the educational building and facilities, and > work with communities, families and young people We would be pleased to host a visit from interested parties to discuss the huge potential for this site.
