    Situation

In 2013-14, our counselling service helped 985 young people. The main issues they faced included anger (17.7%), depression (16%), low confidence/self esteem (10.8%), family issues (8%), and anxiety (23.4%). Bullying and self harm are also common. This is caused or made worse by exams, peer pressure, family difficulties, financial trouble, drug and alcohol use, and poor communication skills. As a result, young people may lack friends, qualifications, or motivation to work.

    Solution

Counselling offers young people the chance to talk confidentially to trustworthy, experienced, qualified counsellors without being judged. They are supported to talk about their issues and feelings, and learn to explore, understand, and address them. We make this service easily-accessibly by offering it in local schools so that even young people living in isolated, rural parts of the county have the support they need. In 2013-14, we offered 2339 sessions in schools.
