Refugee and human rights organizations are a large network of motivated and active citizens who have not yet been alerted to the danger that climate change poses to human rights and refugee rights. Residents who are active in this sector are a powerful voice within UK society, while migrants and refugees could become ambassadors for their countries as the UK goes down the low carbon route

    Situation

COIN is involved in a major project funded by Baring to work with refugee organizations. COIN is working with the Refugee Council, Refugee Action, Welsh Refugee Council, Amnesty International and Asylum Aid. COIN had jointly set up a ‘Climate Refugee Roundtable’ which is developing ideas around responding the lack of international protection for ‘climate refugees’. COIN has also set up a Refugee and Migrant Forum to assist refugees and migrants to consider what voice they wanted. It appears that they wish to concentrate on mobilising their people and COIN will assist this.. Weare seeking funding to do further work in this sector of non-environmental NGOS and their supporters.
