Redwings rescues and transports hundreds of sick, injured or traumatised horses every year. Redwings’ Horse Ambulances can be ready in just a few hours to help neglected, abandoned and mistreated equines - we never want to let any horse down, but high millage has taken its toll on our vehicles. To continue our round the clock rescue work, we now need your help to raise £50,000* to buy a replacement ambulance.

    Situation

All our Horse Ambulances are critical for our rescues and Sanctuary work. However, our largest Horse Ambulance, an HGV, has been used extensively and is worn out, so it desperately needs replacing. This vehicle is particularly special due to its size and special modifications which make it safer and more comfortable for horses, especially for transporting those who are unwell or unhandled. Its larger size means we can keep groups of friends close together, which is important for any horse, particularly if they are traumatised or have never been travelled before. It is also more inviting and has interior partitions that can be adapted to keep any number or size of horses safe. In addition its lowered suspension is vital for making long journeys less stressful and less tiring for a poorly horse. Last year our horseboxes, including our Horse Ambulance travelled over 80,000 miles and helped rescue over 180 horses, transporting hundreds more to our Sanctuary farms and Horse Hospital. Redwings has a growing reputation as one of the only charities that can rescue large herds of nervous, unhandled horses so we are increasingly called upon. With the current credit crisis this is likely to increase – our continued ability to help will be vital. Our new horsebox will be purchased second-hand and specially modified according to our needs to enable us to continue this unique and vital work. Some of these modifications will include cameras so the drivers can monitor the horses throughout their journey to make sure they are safe, and a special ramp to make loading easier for nervous or first time travellers. We are heavily dependent on the HGV Horse Ambulance to ensure we don’t have to leave any horse or pony behind when we go on a rescue. With your support we can purchase a new Horse Ambulance and ensure that we can continue to help horses next year and for many years to come. *If we are lucky enough to exceed our massive target, any additional funds will go towards caring for our horsey residents – with over 1000 in our daily care that is a lot of mouths to feed!
