Situation

One in four women are affected by domestic abuse at some point in their lives. Last year, Southend police received over 3,500 reported incidents of domestic abuse. Women experiencing abuse are often frightened, confused and need support to make decisions regarding their future. They are often too scared to approach the police and worried about approaching social services for support.

Solution

The Dove Crisis Centre operates a telephone helpline and drop-in crisis support which helps women to make a safety plan and escape from the abuse if that is what they wish to do. The service also ensures that they are receiving the appropriate support from statutory agencies, advocating on their behalf. The Dove Crisis Centre also offers counselling to women who are in poor mental health following long periods of abuse.
