    Situation

The SARAH Project - Support, Advice, Recovery And Healing Background There are over 1000 people in treatment for substance misuse in Stockton on tees and there are estimated a further 6000 experiencing problematic substance misuse who receive no formal support or treatment. A WAY OUT in Stockton on Tees have worked with young women experiencing problematic substance misuse since June 2002, we have noticed that a number of these women are also being sexually exploited. As an organsiation we believe that the most essential elements of a persons recovery is support, rehabilitation and encouragement. It is also increasingly important to tackle the social isolation and deep rooted emotional problems associated with problematic substance misuse. It is becoming increasingly common to see substance misusers switch addictions in order to cope with the emotional, physiological and sociological changes that occur as someone ceases to use their drug of choice. It is felt that these important components of someone becoming drug free are often missed out of care planning alongside the inclusion and availability of structured after care support. In order to maximise the impact of existing interventions, after care and rehabilitation must be made a priority for the future. It is so heartbreaking to see a person become drug free, only to go back to the cycle of addiction and often crime when either, housing breaks down, social exclusion is left un-tackled or deep rooted emotional needs go unmet. Project Outline The SARAH project is a community based rehabilitation project. The project combines a social inclusion and rehabilitation and recovery programme with the aim of seeing young women break the chains of addictions and go on to live safe, whole and transformed lives. The Programme The A WAY OUT centre in Stockton will host daily activities for someone who as entered into the SARAH project programme. Each programme attendee will be required to take part in at least 10 hours of activities per week, alongside a weekly one to one session with their personal case worker to provide one to one care planing. Social Inclusion When someone has been drug or alcohol dependant for a number of years they are often socially excluded. They have limited supportive relationships and find it difficult to re-engage within society. The Programme will tackle various aspects of social exclusion offering activities such as cookery and life skills courses, team building, socialising opportunities and volunteering opportunities such as community gardening. Rehabilitation Interventions will be offered around the persons substance misuse and / or life controlling addiction and will provide as an example relapse prevention, coping mechanism workshops, group therapies and access to counselling and brief interventions. Healing The women with whom Sarah work will often have suffered in many ways and have deep rooted issues that need intensive care. The Sarah project will offer counselling and a combination of different therpaies aimed at bringing healing to these browen lives. Finance This project costs £60'000 per year This funding covers, running cost's of a day care centre, staffing costs and organsational overheads
