Dig Deep uses a disused allotment site, to create opportunities for learners to get outdoors, boost confidence and self esteem. To date about one third of the site has been cleared, through courses such as Gardening for Beginners and Bushcraft, as well as help from local corporate companies.

Situation

The disused site was often the centre of unsociable behaviour and was covered in litter and other debris. There was also a demand for a project to engage learners who preferred to learn in an outdoor environment.

Solution

After neighbourhood consultations, ASCEND teamed up with Farming for All (another local social enterprise project with community allotment experience) and with help from the local council, the first area was cleared and dug over. This immediately engaged 10 hard to reach learners, who have since become Allotment Volunteers. The neighbours are also behind the project and to date, there has been no further unsociable behaviour on the site.
