Urgent assistance is required for families and communities affected by the tsunami in Indonesia. There are difficulties reaching remote areas and food, water and medicine are running out. Rescuers are struggling with a shortage of heavy equipment to reach desperate victims they can hear calling out from the ruins of collapsed buildings. Up to 1.5 million people who live in the area may have been affected.
UN agencies and NGOs are working closely with Government ministries to provide support as requested. The majority of DEC member charities have had affiliates and partners in the country for many decades. Thirteen out of fourteen DEC members are planning to respond to this emergency either directly or through affiliates, national and local partners.
