More than 90% of households in Nkhata Bay North are farmers earning extremely low incomes, as a result they often face food insecurity and malnutrition. Weather shocks, land degradation and deforestation exacerbate these issues. Training in sustainable farming, carried out by Temwa, has improved crop diversity, yields and forest coverage which has improved nutrition. Poor access to markets and business skills, however, means farmers don’t earn the income they need to support their families.
Temwa will help village communities establish Farmers Associations to pool crops to sell at market. Higher yields will strengthen farmers’ bargaining position and encourage crop diversity. Helping farmers refine their produce with simple machinery, and providing training in marketing and business skills will increase revenues. Farmer Associations will re-distribute profits to their members - meaning families have a cash income and can save and invest for the future.
