Birmingham Hippodrome is committed to access for all, and every year presents the biggest pantomime in the world. Our Big Idea brings together both of these aspects through the staging of a Relaxed Performance of Snow White, designed specifically for audiences with autism and learning disabilities.

    Situation

From listening and working closely with them for many years, we know that people with learning disabilities can find attending and enjoying live performance a challenge. The dark auditorium, sound amplification and busy theatre foyers can all make for a daunting experience. Added to this, the pressure to be still and quiet during a performance can deter people from attempting to attend for fear of disturbing surrounding audience members.

    Solution

Through a Relaxed Performance we aim to address the problem by promoting a supportive, friendly theatre environment for people of all ages to enjoy. Sound levels will be reduced and house lights dimmed. Working with the production company, we will present a modified show, tailored to the needs of this audience. Visitors will be sent venue and show information in advance to help them prepare and staff will undergo specialised training focused on communicating and interacting with the audience.
