Health facilities in Burma are scarce, under-resourced and expensive, leaving many children unable to get the medical care they need. This project will pay for children to go to hospitals in Thailand for surgery & medical support, changing the lives of children with cardiac disease, injuries, etc.

    Situation

Only 2% of Burma's GDP is spent on health. Facilities are scarce, under-resourced & costly. For many people who are sick, the only option is to travel across the borders in the hope of finding medical attention. At Mae Tao Clinic in Mae Sot, Thailand, they treat over 115,000 such people a year. But, funds are tight, and they are unable to perform many surgeries. Often Burmese children who need surgery simply have their symptoms treated, but live severely incapacitated lives, or die prematurely.

    Solution

Thai Children's Trust and Burma Children's Medical Fund (BCMF) will work together to provide medical assistance to 22 Burmese children. We will organise transport and safe passage for the children and their parents/guardians to Thai hospitals, arrange their surgery and follow-up, and provide accommodation during recovery, or between treatments if needed. These children will receive the life-changing, and often life-saving, surgery they desperately need to help them live more comfortable lives.
