To use the beautiful John Ruskin Collection as an inspiration to redevelop the tired, under-used Ruskin Gallery and the well-worn much-used Learning Centre into vibrant, inclusive, accessible spaces for visitors, schools and adult learning groups alike.

    Situation

Our visitor surveys tell us that the Ruskin Gallery is the least visited space in the Millennium Gallery. It is inaccessible, stagnant, unchanging and a tired space, difficult for disabled visitors to navigate, with poor communication for the visually impaired. Visitor numbers are low despite the beautiful collections. The Learning Centre too falls short of basic provision for today's children and adult learners and is becoming a concern for Museums Sheffield as well as users.

    Solution

We will completely redevelop the Gallery and requip the Learning Centre to: Create gallery and learning spaces that visitors want to spend time in. That are warm, welcoming and enticing. That inspire awe and wonder and that encourage visitors to stop and think. Encourage discovery and inspiration. Provide the widest possible access to the Ruskin Collection.
