Getting Girls Out Of Gangs

Platform 51 will provide outreach support with peer mentors to girls and women (G&W) who are vulnerable, disadvantaged and involved with gangs or on the periphery of gang culture. Many will have self-esteem and confidence issues and are at risk of or are actually being sexually exploited.

Situation

G&W involved in or on the periphery of gang culture have: • limited awareness around consent and coercion so are susceptible to sexual exploitation • low self-esteem and confidence leaving them vulnerable to negative peer pressure • little understanding of the risk or consequences of their decisions and behaviour • commonly been victims or witnesses of abuse • insufficient opportunities, amenities and little or no encouragement to engage positively within their community

Solution

Platform 51 engages the most vulnerable & hard to reach. We will work on the streets in the evenings when G&W are most at risk. Peer mentors (former gang members) with a full understanding of the gang cultures, will encourage the G&W to participate & progress through the Platform 51 programme. We will equip them with the knowledge & confidence to overcome barriers to fulfilling their potential, helping them make positive decisions, leading a healthy life & contributing to a cohesive community.
