We're a victim of our own success. In the 45 years since we opened, our 10m visitors had taken their toll and our buildings needed substantial refurbishment and TLC. Our big idea is to secure mac for future generations and create a new, 21st century arts centre for the people of the West Midlands.

    Situation

Our arts centre is a hub for the community, a place where people of all ages can meet to debate, create and participate. Over the past 45 years, we were well-used and well-loved, but had become somewhat shabby around the edges and unable to keep up with our visitors expectations. We reach all parts of the local community: under 25s make up 43% of our audience and 22% of the visitors are under 16. 21% of our users are from BME communities, and we also welcome thousands of older visitors.

    Solution

We have already invested £15.2m to rebuild mac, to provide a secure, sustainable organisation for the people of Birmingham and the West Midlands. But now we need to complete the Building Appeal and pay the final bills! Since reopening, we've welcome over 1/2 million visitors; worked with scores of local schools; and engaged thousands of artists in our work, so we know that there's a demand for our work - and that we are already beginning to solve the problem.
