Moss locks up carbon as it grows. Restore our precious Mosslands and the moss continues to grow - it is a 'perpetual sink' for carbon. Mossland is 'our' rainforest, being dug up to put on people's gardens. Over 98% of the North West's Mosslands have been lost - help us to save it for the future!

    Situation

Drained or dug-up for peat, mosslands emit vast amounts of carbon dioxide, heating up the planet. In fact, the degraded mosslands of England could be ‘leaking’ as much carbon into the environment every year as 110,000 cars. Mosslands are also important habitats for wildlife like reptiles, spiders and dragonflies.

    Solution

In our Trust area alone, there are 840 hectares of mosslands that can be restored as carbon sinks, with the potential to absorb the carbon footprints of 25,657 people. A major part of restoring a mossland, once the Trust has acquired the site, is to "re-wet" the bog. This involves monitoring water levels, ditch blocking and creating bund, a peat barrier to stop the rainwater running off. Our project aims to buy mosslands, restore them back to health and campaign to stop further peat extraction
