Classroom facilities in many rural schools are simply inadequate. Classrooms can be made with mud walls that disintegrate during the rainy season and provide little protection from the elements. Structures are often unsafe: eg at one school a dividing wall collapsed one day during lessons – fortunately no-one was hurt. Schools lack educational materials and teachers are poorly trained keeping exam results low. Many children, especially older girls, drop out of school.

Constructing or renovating classroom blocks will provide a safe learning environment. Desks, sports equipment and textbooks will also be supplied to help children learn. Better toilet facilities and sanitary protection will encourage girls to remain in school. A variety of training sessions will also be conducted for the teachers, parents, pupils and wider community covering teaching methods, HIV/AIDS, school management, parental participation and gender awareness.
